Children and Youth Competition

The Children and Youth Competition invites children and young adults, who are not yet enrolled at a conservatory or university of music full-time, to compete in three different age categories.

A total of two public rounds will be held between August 23 and August 25, 2018 in Meiningen's Schlosskirche. The winners will perform in an awardees concert.


The Repertory

The repertory chosen for the Hans von Bülow Piano Competition should include the following selections:

• composers whose works were masterfully interpreted by Hans von Bülow: Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Peter Tchaikovsky.
• works by composers (including transcriptions and piano arrangements) who were connected to Meiningen: Hans von Bülow, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, Max Reger, Günter Raphael


Requirements

Children up to age 13 (born before August 23, 2005)
  • In the preliminary round (up to 15 minutes), compulsory electives include one etude and one piece or movement from the Classical period. Additional pieces can be chosen freely. When multi-movement works are chosen, individual movements can be selected for performance.
  • In the final round (up to 15 minutes) one Romantic piece is to be performed. Additional pieces can be chosen freely. When multi-movement works are chosen, individual movements can be selected for performance.

Children ages 14 to 15
  • In the preliminary round (up to 15 minutes) compulsory electives include one etude and one piece or movement from the Classical period. Additional pieces can be chosen freely. When multi-movement works are chosen, individual movements can be selected for performance.
  • In the final round (up to 20 minutes) one Romantic piece is to be performed. Additional pieces can be chosen freely. When multi-movement works are chosen, individual movements can be selected for performance.

Young adults ages 16 to 17
  • In the preliminary round (up to 15 minutes) compulsory electives include one etude and one piece or movement from the Classical period. Additional pieces can be chosen freely. When multi-movement works are chosen, individual movements can be selected for performance.
  • In the final round (up to 25 minutes) one Romantic piece is to be performed. Additional pieces can be chosen freely. When multi-movement works are chosen, individual movements can be selected for performance.

In the 1st and final rounds, participants may choose the order of pieces; the program for the awardees concerts will be determined by the jury.


Participation fee

There will be a participation fee of € 50 and a one-time processing fee of € 30. In case of cancellation by the participant before July 23, 2018, the participation fee will be refunded. The processing fee is non-refundable.


Time schedule Children and youth competition

Both competition rounds are public and will take place in the Schlosskirche at Elisabethenburg Palace. The winners will be presented in a festive awardees concert with awards ceremony.

All times are tentative. Minor scheduling changes may occur.

Thursday, August 23, 2018

• starting at 10 am: arrival, registration, organizational matters, practice opportunities
• 2 am—6 pm: 1st round children up to age 13, announcement of finalists
• 7:30 pm: opening night

Friday, August 24, 2018

• 9:30—12 am: 1st round children ages 14 to 15, announcement of finalists
• 2:30—7 am: 1st round young adults ages 16 to 17, announcement of finalists

Saturday, August 25, 2018

• before noon: final rounds children up to age 13 and children ages 14 to 15, announcement of winners
• afternoon: final round young adults ages 16 to 17, announcement of winners
• 7:30 pm: festive awardees concert with awards ceremony and reception


The Prizes

Each competition category offers attractive monetary and non-monetary prizes. In addition to the regular prizes, there will be special awards, CD recordings and follow-up performance opportunities.

  • 1st Prize Children up to age 13: € 400
  • 2nd Prize Children up to age 13: € 250
  • 3rd Prize Children up to age 13: € 100

  • 1st Prize Children ages 14 to 15: € 400
  • 2nd Prize Children ages 14 to 15: € 250
  • 3rd Prize Children ages 14 to 15: € 100

  • 1st Prize Young adults ages 16-17: € 400
  • 2nd Prize Young adults ages 16-17: € 250
  • 3rd Prize Young adults ages 16-17: € 100
Further prizes in planning:
  • A special prize made available by the International Association of Richard Wagner Societies and the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation will entail a scholarship, free tickets to three performances at the Bayreuth Festival, and a performance opportunity in the International Concert of Scholarship Recipients during the 2019 festival season.
  • Audience Choice Award for the awardees concert in the amount of € 250.
  • CDs of the solo repertory that has been prepared for the competition will be recorded shortly after the competition.
  • Further attractive performance opportunities may be made possible.
